2024 Mid-Ohio Speedtour

June 20 – 23, 2024 | Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course – Lexington, OH

June 28,2024:  The specially made power steering parts did not arrive at the shop in time, forcing the team to take the Leadfoot Racing Corvette to Mid-Ohio knowing that we had a genuine problem. Adding to the steering issues, on a Tuesday test day, the car was starting to overheat. A total mystery, as nothing in the steering system was dragging on the engine. The pump was not seizing up. It was turning fine – it just was not pumping fluid as well as all other systems were totally a go. The car just started to run concernedly hot. We had no choice – we had to go as we were leading the points battle and there were thirty-six points up for grabs. We left the shop fully expecting to have to deal with a catastrophe.

It was to be another two race weekend. We ran Saturday’s race under ridiculously hot 95 degree plus conditions and Colby wisely brought the car in about halfway through the race for a squirt of water onto the radiator and then took as slow as was possible under the circumstances lap to let the beast cool down. There were only four other cars in Colby’s class and two of them were also experiencing heat-related problems and had retired, so at least third place was assured and that is where we ended up.

Rain on Sunday and a combination of the ongoing problems and monsoon-like conditions – we just chose to pack it up and get the car back to the shop and try and figure out the problem, thus we did not run the race. At this point we had 177 Group 6 points – 70 points over our closest competitors and we were also ranking second. for the overall championship so, we were hopeful that we at least had the Group 6 Points Championship sewed up.

Next up was a long trip heading southeast and through the West Virginia mountains to Alton VA. And Virginia International Raceway – aka VIR.
